Life in early Texas was not easy for those living in the colony founded by Green DeWitt in 1825. DeWitt was one of several leaders, or empresarios, to whom the Mexican government had granted permission to bring families from the States to settle in that area of Mexico called Texas. It was common knowledge that DeWitt's American Colony was not the only one. Stephen Austin had brought 300 families and they had settled on the Brazos River. Still another settlement was near the Mexican village of Nacogdoches on the Texas-Louisiana border.
Other colonies were the Power and Hewetson Colony and the Robertson Colony. Empresario DeWitt had selected his location carefully. It was to be the most western settlement of immigrants from the United States in Texas. It was an ideal site with plenty of animal life, fertile soil, and beautiful trees. The Guadalupe River sup- Page 3 plied clean, clear water for the original families who came with DeWitt. The settlers claimed their land and set about cutting trees for their cabins. The people worked hard, never thinking that their efforts might be doomed.
